Why snow load drives the whole design
In markets such as Canada, the Nordic countries, the Alps and northern China, the ground snow load is often the governing load case rather than wind. A high design snow value increases the force each purlin, rail, post and foundation must carry, which changes rail span, support spacing and steel section. Treating snow as an afterthought is the most common cause of under-sized cold-climate structures, so the load basis should be fixed before any system is short-listed.
Ground snow load versus roof snow load
The number that matters is not a single headline figure. Engineers translate the ground snow load into a roof or array snow load using exposure, thermal and shape factors set by the local code (for example ASCE 7 in North America or EN 1991-1-3 in Europe). Drift and sliding snow near obstructions can locally multiply the load. A ground mounting or flat-roof layout in a heavy-snow zone should therefore be reviewed with the real code basis, not a generic assumption.
Tilt angle, clearance and drainage
In snow country, tilt and clearance are performance decisions as well as structural ones. A steeper tilt sheds snow faster and recovers winter production, but raises wind exposure and can increase steel. Ground clearance under the lowest module edge must allow accumulated snow to slide clear rather than bury the bottom row. On flat roofs, snow can slide into valleys between rows, so row spacing and drainage paths need to be checked together with the ballast plan.
Foundations in frost and frozen ground
Cold-climate ground projects add a foundation dimension: frost depth. Driven piles and ground screws must reach below the frost line to avoid frost heave lifting the structure over winter cycles. A geotechnical report that states frost depth, soil type and pull-out capacity lets Apex align pile embedment or screw length with the site. Where driving is difficult in frozen or rocky ground, a ground screw system or ballasted approach may be compared against driven piles.
