Foundations decide utility-project economics
On a utility-scale field, the foundation is one of the biggest drivers of both cost and construction schedule. The debate between driven piles and ground screws is not about which is universally better, but about which fits the soil, the terrain, the installation window and the local steel price. Getting this decision right on paper avoids expensive redesign once machines are already on site.
Where driven piles win
Driven pile ground mounting is efficient on large open fields with predictable soil where pull-out performance can be verified. Piles use no concrete, install quickly with the right rig, and repeat cleanly across regular row geometry. They are often the default for flat, high-capacity sites, provided the soil profile supports driving and does not hide rock or refusal layers that stop the pile short.
Where ground screws win
Ground screw systems reduce concrete work, cope with some slopes and can be attractive where soil disturbance must be limited or where fast, low-noise installation matters. They suit smaller or terrain-variable sites and projects with restoration requirements. Screw length and diameter still depend on soil type, frost depth and pull-out demand, so the geotechnical report remains essential.
Terrain, agrivoltaics and clearance
Sloped and dual-use land is changing foundation choice. Terraced structures and high-clearance systems let projects follow gradients or share land with agriculture, which shifts the structural model and the foundation reactions. A terrace ground system can be compared against pile and screw options once the terrain and clearance targets are known.
Comparing options on a like-for-like basis
The strongest RFQ asks for driven pile and ground screw options against the same layout, load basis, soil data and corrosion class. Comparing a pile quote for one assumption with a screw quote for another hides the real difference.
