ARENA Opens $250 Million Solar Sunshot Round 3 for Deployment Technology

ARENA has launched a Solar Sunshot round with up to A$250 million for commercial-scale solar deployment technologies, including racking, tracking and automation.

A funding round aimed at making solar farms faster to build

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) launched Solar Sunshot Round 3 on 15 October 2026 with up to A$250 million for commercial-scale solar manufacturing, balance-of-plant and deployment technologies. ARENA says the round includes racking and tracking systems, robotics, advanced automation and prefabrication; expressions of interest open on 2 November 2026.

What the announcement does and does not mean

This is a funding opportunity, not an equipment award, project notice to proceed or confirmation of a supplier. It does not establish Apex participation. Its relevance to solar construction is direct: the stated objective is to reduce the cost and complexity of building utility-scale projects, where structure design, installation sequence and logistics affect the delivered schedule.

Buyer impact for mounting and EPC teams

Teams evaluating an eligible technology should turn its claimed construction benefit into a testable project basis. Record the module envelope, terrain and geotechnical assumptions, wind and snow loads, corrosion environment, installation method, fleet or crew interfaces, packaging and quality-control checkpoints. Compare a claimed productivity gain with the actual civil, electrical and commissioning critical path rather than treating it as a stand-alone hardware metric.

Next step for project planning

Use the round as a prompt to identify deployment risks that can be designed out before procurement. Apex utility-scale mounting solutions and single-axis tracker options can be assessed only against a verified site and module basis; no product is represented as funded or selected under this program.
